Janssen mechanism

strandbeest (beach animal)

Theo Jansen website. one of the free thinkers, dreamers

Nice 4 stick animation allowing you to toy with stick dimensions. The trick of his mechanism is the flatness of the lower part, ie. following the groundsurface, combined with the nice clearance when lifting the foot.

The Jansen mechanism also uses extremely little energy the motion. Which is very nicely illustrated by Theo Jansen pulling his giant Rhinoceros all ons his own in bad weather.

On the internet and youtube there are lots of pictures and movies of the mecahnism, one of those youtube is by me, it is so well looked at that I have now made an HD version, enjoy.
I got so intrigued by the mechanism that I designed a walking cycle, based on the The Jansen mechanism, never intended to be fast or anything, but just for fun and as a learning experince in animation.
