Lots of developments in bicycle gearing the last couple of years.
The Pinion system has an almost lateral approach as they decided to put the gearing where the force is put unto the bicycle, the "pinion"
Their website.
I like there approach a lot and tests seem to show it works briliantly, with a belt drive this could be close to the ideal bicycle with current technology.
In their favour:
- excellent gear placement
- sequential shifting
- shiften both under power and while standing
- good weight distrubution
- sealed system.
Not so favourable:
- needs spcial frame
- expensive
- still a startup, so how will it be in a couple of years..

America's cup, what could be next
Congratulations Oracle team USA.
Congratulations Organizers for this super exiting new sailing format. It feels like America's cup sailing has found its place in our time, for more than the sailing geek or tech geek.
Super entertainment with high tech.
For me much better than te boring F1 which has sold its soul to commerce.
What could be next?
Good/excellent:
- San Fransisco as venue.
- The youtube broadcasting.
- The overlays.
- The sailing course adapted to the speed potential of the AC72's
What can be improved upon:
- The Louis Vuitton cup racing, basically only Luna Rossa was a bit ready to race and the other teams were not ready yet.
- The defenders preparation always has been a problem in the America's cup as they can only race against their "own".
- The breaking off of the races due te increasing windspeed was a bit theoretical. Although the fatal accidents should of course be avoided
Next cup challenge:
- Next year!
- Same design rules (AC72) with some slight changes to increase overall speed.
- Allow rear foil control and ride-height control for upwind foiling and outright speed.
What absolutely not to do:
- Absolutely do not go for one-design races.
- Don't go back to keelboats, or monohulls.
- Go for light wind.

A post from Italy
Remigio Maladino mailed me some interesting pictures of a plywood velomobile:
He writes: "All three vehicles (one velomobile, one trike without fairing but quite interesting for the very accurate construction, and an original plane-bycicle toy made during the fascist period) in the pictures are currently for sale in a carrozzeria in my town, Treviso. Only for my curiosity I asked about prices at the beginning of Summer. The owner said he paid nearly 20.000 euro for the lot. I don't know if I had to believe it or not and in any case I was not at all interested in buying it, I was only very interested about the peculiar shape and especially about the technical solutions of the two trikes: The one I sent you the first pictures is very interesting, I suppose also for you for the fact that the wood body was surely built around a former, a shape with different layers of veneered wood, not plywood like your velomobile. In this way it was possible to have double curved sheets but at the price of a much higher quantity of work.
It was interesting for me to see that you had the privilege of working and developing the Alleweder. I agree with you when you say that the great success of the diy kits was probably due to the self satisfaction that may derive to build your own velomobile. In addition to that there is alsothe fact that it can be forwarded all over the world with three boxes, or like some say that it can be easily Ups-able!
The wooden velomobile in the picture as i already told you was built by an independent mechanical engineer - sorry I forgot the name at the moment (will probably ask it tomorrow and let you know more) in the Torino area in the seventies. In the other pictures you can spot the engineer with the famous, at least for me -and at that time younger- designer Giorgetto Giugiaro (VW Golf, Fiat Panda, Fiat Punto etc)."
I like the craftmanship of this machine. It must have taken a tremendous effort to design and built it. The design was made in the 70-ties but it associate it with the 30-ties. Before Dupont and the like developed glass fiber reinforced polyester. It shows some resemblance with the work of Harald Winkler.

4 questions for: Steve Macdonald, on Coaching the Mind
Steve Macdonald. |
One of these is the three-hour Coaching the Mind module, which will be offered on Wednesday, Oct. 2 in the evening in Oak Park. We talked with Steve about this course, which is being offered for the first time in the midwest.
Have Kayaks, Will Travel: What excites you about this module?
Steve Macdonald: The fact that it allows coaches to understand a bit more of the psychology that their clients might be experiencing. This can help them get the best out of a coaching episode and, more importantly, their ongoing paddlesport development. Mental skills are very fundamental. People have confidence issues, anxiety issues and all of that stuff, so it’s very relevant.
HKWT: What do you find participants gain from it?
SM: I think it broadens people's coaching, moving it away from just thinking of coaching only in terms of technical skills. You're familiar with TTPP, right? Generally, recreational coaches are focused on techniques and tactics, and [this module] helps make them more holistic coaches.
HKWT: Will it also be applicable to people who teach or coach things other than paddlesports, such as gym teachers, soccer coaches and ski instructors?
SM: Absolutely. We’ll look at how mental skills training is going to help in a training context, in a performance context and even in a competitive context. Some of the key things that we’re going to be focusing on are imagery, concentration and attentional focus. We'll look at how to manage anxiety and deal with confidence issues, making sure people aren’t overstimulated by the environment. It’s all about preparing people to be doing something in an environment when that environment might be stressful. There’s lots of sideways, tangential applications.
Steve coaching a group of students in Ireland. |
SM: It should be interactive. There will be information at the front, but then we'll go out and workshop some of the strategies we’ve been talking about. There's no point in doing it unless we're doing it, you know? We're paddlesport coaches; we understand that learning has to take place in a practical context. The games, activities and exercises we do will be to reinforce the theoretical stuff we've been discussing.
You: This sounds great! Can I attend?
HKWT: Yes. The cost is just $35 and you can register online here. We should know the exact location of this module within the week. If you have questions, post them as comments here or contact us at kayak.bp (at) gmail (dot) com.
